Representatives attended the 37th ICANAS Congress in Moscow
The
37th International Congress of Asian and North African Studies (ICANAS)
was held in Moscow from August 16 to 21, 2004. The theme of the
congress was “Unity Within Diversity.” ICANAS is a world-class academic
conference, with a 130-year-old tradition. At the opening ceremony,
Russian President Putin, Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergey Lavrov,
President of Kyrgyzstan, Askar Akayav, and founder of the Institute of
Oriental Philosophy (IOP) Daisaku Ikeda’s
message were introduced. During the “Spiritual Culture”
subcommittee, Mr. Ikeda’s keynote thesis “World Peace and the
Lotus Sutra” was presented.
From our institute, IOP Director
Yoichi Kawada delivered his presentation titled, “Dying with
dignity, euthanasia, and the Lotus Sutra,” and IOP Chief Research
Fellow Toru Shiotsu spoke on “Viewing the Significance of the Idea in
the Lotus Sutra from the Eyes of Contemporary Constitutional Law.” IOP
Senior Research Fellow Hiroshi Kanno gave a presentation
on “Huisi’s
Perspective on the Lotus Sutra as Seen Through the Meaning of the
Course of Ease and Bliss in the Lotus Sutra.”
On this occasion, "Lotus Sutra Manuscript Series" which was published
by Soka
Gakkai was exhibited. The editor of the series, IOP
commissioned Research Fellow
Haruki Kotsuki introduced the
manuscripts to the
delegates.
