Symposium
with the World Poetry Society Intercontinental
On
October 5, 2007, a Symposium “Poetry for World Peace, Harmony and
Humanism” was co-sponsored by India’s World Poetry Society
Intercontinental and the Institute of Oriental Philosophy (IOP). It was
held at the Chinmaya Centre in Chennai, India.
The World Poetry Society Intercontinental was founded in 1960 with the
participation of over 3,000 poets from the world over. Its monthly
magazine, “Poet” is circulated and read in approximately 50 countries.
The symposium’s theme was “Poetry for World Peace, Harmony and
Humanism.” Renowned delegates, such as President Krishna Srinavas, Vice
president A. Padmanaban and Chairman Sethu Kumanan (Soka Ikeda College
of Arts and Science for Women) participated in the symposium. More than
700 participants, including a number of poets, attended, and some
poetry was read at the events.
During
the symposium, the Society conferred the title of “World People’s
Poet”—the first of its kind—upon IOP founder Daisaku Ikeda in
commendation of his
continuous efforts to give
hope and courage to people through his poetry. In 1981, IOP founder
Ikeda was declared a poet laureate by the World Academy of
Arts and Culture. In 1991 the International Poet’s Academy bestowed
the title of “International Eminent Poet and “Fellow Membership” status
on him. IOP founder Ikeda was also conferred the “World Poet Laureate
Award”
by India’s World Poetry Society Intercontinental in 1995.
