On March 24, 2013, the
Institute of Oriental Philosophy (IOP) organized Public Lecture in
Hiroshima, Japan by Dr. Winston E. Langley, Provost and
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Massachusetts,
Boston. In his speech titled "Hiroshima
and the Trajectory
of History”,
he claimed that the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima (and
Nagasaki) represent the consummation of a long, cruel road in the
process of thingification of human beings, and it was made possible the
replacement of the use of human and animal muscle power with the
harness inanimate forces of nature. He further stated, "Article 9 [of
the Japanese Constitution] and Hiroshima invite us to transform the
trajectory of history, to create where we once destroyed, to hope where
we once despaired, to share what we once took, to seek unity and
solidarity, where we pursued division and disassociation, and to affirm
and embody liberation where we once sought domination."
