Lotus
Sutra Exhibition Held in Taiwan
From
January 27-March 30, 2013, the exhibition “the Lotus Sutra—A Message
of Peace and Harmonious Coexistence” was held at Zhi Shan Culture
Center in Taipei. This was organized by the Institute of Oriental
philosophy (IOP) and Taiwan Soka Associateion (TSA). Supporters of the
event included Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of
Culture (MOC), The National Palace Museum (NPM), National Taiwan
University (NTU) and other organizations. The exhibition was held in
Taiwan for the
first time. The venue, Zhi Shan Culture Center, is located in front of
the NPM.
On
display were some 130 items including facsimiles of nine versions of
Chinese translations of the Lotus Sutra by Kumarajiva (344-413
C.E.), as well as reproduction of Lotus Sutra manuscripts in
various languages. There were also facsimiles of the Gilgit Lotus Sutra
Manuscripts from the National Archives of India and copies of the
Kern-Nanjio edition of the Sanskrit Lotus Sutra. The displays and
panels shown at the exhibition helped to convey the message of the
seven parables in the Lotus Sutra and history and transmission of the
spread of the Lotus Sutra.
At the opening ceremony, TSA General
Director Lin Chao, IOP Director Yoichi Kawada and Administrative
Deputy Minister of the Interior Lin Tzu-ling delivered the speeches.
Ms. Lin Tzu-ling commented that the fundamental spirit of the Lotus
Sutra is its recognition of the dignity of all people and that she felt
the SGI aims to actualize the state of Buddhahood in each individual
based on this
ideal.
Mr. Hsiao Tsung-huang thanksed TSA for contributing to the development
of
art in Taiwan and urged people to visit the Lotus Sutra exhibition and
to bring their children. IOP Director Yoichi Kawada and IOP senior
research fellow Hiroshi Kanno presented lectures on
the Lotus Sutra.
