Daisaku Ikeda, the founder of the Institute of Oriental Philosophy (IOP), tours Budhagaya, India, and resolves to establish the research institute.

・Institute of Oriental Studies (Toyo Gakujutsu Kenkyujo) founded in Shinagawa, Tokyo.
・First issue of The Journal of Oriental Studies published.
Dec. 3, 1965
Institute recognized by the government as a foundation, renamed to the Institute of Oriental Philosophy (Toyo Tetsugaku Kenkyujo).
Apr. 1973
Institute relocates to Uehara, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo.
Oct. 1978
First observation tour of Buddhist sites along the Silk Road (Afghanistan and Pakistan).
Aug. 1979
Second observation tour of Buddhist sites along the Silk Road (Pakistan).
Apr. 1981
The 100th volume of The Journal of Oriental Studies published.
Mar. 1985
First Scholarly Conference held.
Jun. 1986
Institute relocates to a new facility in Hachioji, Tokyo; opening ceremony held.
Jul. 1987
First English language edition of The Journal of Oriental Studies published.
May. 1989
The IOP European Centre established in Taplow Court near London.
